A strong field of top amateur golfers competed over the weekend of 19-20 Nov., in the final Cayman Islands Golf Association World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR) event of the year, the Grant Thornton Fall Classic.

Andrew Jarvis, who has dominated during the 2022 WAGR season, came out on top again with rounds of 66, 65 and 68 for a 14 under par total score, giving him a 10-shot victory over younger brother Aaron who finished second.

Payten Wight finished in third place while newcomer Morgan Crowe claimed first place in the non-ranked division.

Andrew, presently ranked at 267th in the world, faced a talented field of several world-ranked players including his brother Aaron (317th), Payten Wight (613th), Giles Hobday (928th) as well as newly ranked Holly McLean (2,806th in the women’s rankings) and Barry Daly (4,528th) who both recently won tournaments and secured their ranked status.

“These events have been very successful and are a big part of developing the top level of the game on Island,” said Giles Hobday, coordinator of the WAGR events.

“You only need to look at the success and achievements of Aaron Jarvis this year, who played at The Masters and made the cut at The Open Championship, to see the impact that top amateur golf can have on the lives of young people. We have three young athletes who have received golf scholarships to play Division 1 college golf in the US.

“A full schedule of WAGR events is planned for 2023 and we are extremely grateful for the support received from our title sponsor Grant Thornton and the rest of the sponsors who support golf in the Cayman Islands.”
